structure of the epidermis of those areas of skin subject to tylosis, and we suggest that both tissues may be responsive to the same functional requirement-namely, the need to provide resistance to mechanical friction. Human epidermis can be classified into "thick" and "thin" types.3 Thick skin is found most characteristically on the palms and soles, and relative to thin skin it has a thicker stratum corneum, a more marked stratum granulosum, and a thick stratum spinosum. It also has a stratum lucidum (Fig. 1), a layer not found in thin skin, and is devoid of hair follicles. In sections of skin from the middle finger of a female cadaver it was noted that the histological appearances overlying the metacarpophalangeal and proximal and distal interphalangeal joints and distal phalanx were those of thick skin, as judged by their conformity with the features described above. Tylosis with oesophageal cancer: Diagnosis, management and molecular mechanisms
Tylosis (hyperkeratosis palmaris et plantaris) is characterised by focal thickening of the skin of the hands and feet and is associated with a very high lifetime risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus. This risk has been calculated to be 95% at the age of 65 in one large family, however the frequency of the disorder in the general population is not known and is likely to b...
متن کاملHuman papillomavirus in squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus associated with tylosis.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) may have a pathogenic role in squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus. Tylosis, an inherited thickening of the skin of the palms and soles, was associated with a high risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus among members of a large family in Liverpool. The resected carcinomas of the oesophagus was examined from four such patients with DNA probes...

oesophageal cancer is one of the most fatal cancer in human in spite of high incidence in the north of Iran and poor prognosis, there is not information regarding prognostic factors in this area.this study was conducted to determine prognodtic factors of the survival of patients with oesophageal cancer under radiotherapy. We conducted a descriptive-analytical study using historical cohort that ha...
متن کاملProtection from Intracellular Oxidative Stress by Cytoglobin in Normal and Cancerous Oesophageal Cells
Cytoglobin is an intracellular globin of unknown function that is expressed mostly in cells of a myofibroblast lineage. Possible functions of cytoglobin include buffering of intracellular oxygen and detoxification of reactive oxygen species. Previous work in our laboratory has demonstrated that cytoglobin affords protection from oxidant-induced DNA damage when over expressed in vitro, but the i...

Aim-To identify the possible role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), in Chinese patients, in the pathogenesis of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.Methods-Formalin fixed, paraffin wax embedded tissues from 74 cases of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (28 with well differentiated, 27 with moderately differentiated and 18 with poorly differentiated carcinomas) were analysed for EBV using in situ h...
